Introduction: Teaching Design History on BTEC Curriculum

For this assignment I am going to use a real case study based on my last taught unit of a BTEC Edexcel programme. BTEC Edexcel is widely recognised as work-related qualifications appropriate for working adult from England. The Level 5 qualifications are at a level equivalent to a Higher Diploma. This programme is offered with a minimum English qualification of IELTS 4.5 (or equivalent)

I was responsible to deliver this programme to a group of foreign students in one of the Private Education Institute (PEI) in Singapore. Most of the students are of their early twenties and come from mainland China. Despite passing the basic requirement English test, most of these students are still very weak with in their English proficiency.

Delivering lecturing class is a nightmare, as most of them only understand basic conversational English. To add the matter worst, I had to teach a dry subject – Design History and most of the students have no prior knowledge of the topic. For their final assessment they will be marked based on 5000 words report. The daunting assessment method set by the school escalated into an unhappy situation with low student satisfaction and poor teacher performance.

Initiative: Learner-Centered Environment

Active Learning and Emphasis on Deep Learning

Most of the student I taught are either Visual or Kinesthetic learners. The plan was to anchor on their learner-profile’s interest as to get their attention, motivate and impart as much knowledge as possible.

To the visual-oriented students, the additional aid of pictures and movies helped them in understading the topic better. Also at this young age, they are very active and would prefer to have a workshop style class. The initiative was to change the teaching method from purely lecturing class to an activity based classroom. Using Kolb’ Experiential Learning style active participation of students were required and deep learning can be achieved.

Authentic Assessment

Instead of Summative assessment (submission of report by the end of the unit), the assessment method can be changed with Formative assessment. This way psychologically students would have more confidence with their assessment and students’ retention of knowledge were improved. Formative assessment also helps students in identifying their strengths and weakness. I was able to recognize where the students were struggling and address the problem and worked on it immediately.

Example of Formative assessment includes submission of journal, peer assessment and class presentation. To add to my point, a journal could be done using an online blogging system. This technique suit well to the young learner who are IT-savy and are familiar with social media. Using the Internet platform such as Facebook page or forum student can discuss on the topic that has been taught in school. They were free to discuss in their own language as long as everyone understand each other and the topic. By doing this, assignment would have a better quality as compared to the report version where most of the contents are from Wikipedia or direct translation from Chinese with Google Translate.

Challenge 1: Constraint Over School’s and BTEC’s Policy

School’s Obstacle: Fear of New Changes

BTEC Edexcel has a strict and rigid guideline. Every year an external moderator from England will come to check and monitor the progress of the school. So far the school has attained an ‘A’ grade for the Design department. The Academic management believes that if they continue with the old practice and methodology (lecture style) their KPI and ranking will be secured.

On the issue of formative assessment using blogging system, technological changes was quite hard to accept especially to the Academic management who are not so receptive to new changes. They do not believe on over-reliance use of Internet. The marking of assessment would take harder and longer if they were done through online blogging. The Academic Manager also believes that students still need to learn skill to write a proper report.

Solution: Pilot Project

To overcome the fear of failing the implementation of a Learner-centered environment, this initiative can be done on a small scale. Any possible issues can be brought up during the monthly Teacher meeting and discuss it with the rest of the academic team. On top of that BTEC has emphasized the teaching on techniques rather than transfer of information[1].

If the implementation of the pilot project is proven to be successful, it can be implemented on other units as well. Academic Manager could then explain the new initiative to BTEC external verifier without worrying about the school’s ranking.

Challenge 2: Implementing a New Strategy

Student’s Obstacle: Over-dependencies on Teacher

Once the students are changed with the active learning method there might be some resistant from the student who used to be guided step by step by the teacher. Student may feel lost and does not know what to do next. This initiative require students to have more responsibility with their personal learning. If not monitor properly, this could result indeed backfire and worsen students’ performance.

Solution: Back to Basic

To address the above student and school issue on teaching and assessment delivery using blogging sytem, the idea was later scrapped and sticked to the original hard-copy report style. This time instead of writing 5000 words of report, it was split into several parts.

The first part is a peer-marking based journal. Each class students will be introduced with a set of role play. Instead of giving a lecture class, students have to re-enact the role play based on the teaching plan. Each of the role play will help students with their report and understand Design history terminologies and theories. The sets of questions were adapted with something practical than theoretical to help the students get deeper understanding of the subject matter.

For the second part, in each class students have to present a given set of case-studies on Design theories and have to work in a group. This presentation will have a hard copy version and will be part of the report. As for the last part, students were asked to write a reflective report. This report will talk about their personal experience and thoughts about the subject .This strategy help to facilitate with deep learning.

Peer learning was still done on the social media platform and I joined as the moderator to maintain the relevancy of the topic, monitored student progress and facilitated the discussion. This way students were able to learn from each other in their most convenient form of communication.

Conclusion

Although different approach but the objective remains the same. The above method of Learner-centered environment in has been proven and tested to work better than the conventional method. The focus on learner-center activity has shown that student could feel the improvement and mutual respect between teacher and learners. Students have became more confidence with themselves despite their language disability and most importantly students have retained a great knowledge based on the BTEC Edexcel requirement.

ANNEX 1

Delivery

The unit should be underpinned by an introduction to study skills and research techniques needed by learners. Emphasis should be placed upon the techniques themselves rather than the information, so that the skills can be acquired. With these, learners may undertake research which is of practical use. It may be appropriate to introduce learners to case studies of research programmes that have culminated in culturally influential outcomes.

Assessment

For this unit learners could have a series of lectures on the historical and cultural developments which inform current thought and debate towards the arts. Learners could make an illustrated essay. This essay could form part of the learner’s practical work, and could be linked with practical units.

Abstract

Teaching is a process of interaction between teacher and student through various activities. A large part of learning and teaching process involve in communication. In order to achieve a potent learning, effective communication is clearly required. This essay will explain about the importance of communication in the process of learning and teaching. An ineffective communication situation will be introduced followed by explanation of three concepts of communication namely: Cultural context, Physical context and Functions of non-verbal communication. Using these three concepts, this essay will clearly articulate how communication process can be enhanced.

Introduction

One situation of an ineffective communication in teaching and learning is based on my previous semester class. I had to teach a night class on Edward de Bono’s six thinking hat. The students consist of a group of sixteen new working adult students from various different countries such as: Singapore, Indonesia, China, India and Korea.

The class was held in a huge enclosed classroom where I had to deliver an hour of lecture followed by two hours of activity. Everyone were tired after their long day of work. Since it was the first day of school, everybody sat far from each other making it hard for me to talk as a group.

In one of the activity, everyone had to wear a different colour hat and students had to give response based on he hat’s colour respectively. The selection was done randomly and happened that the Chinese student got the green colour hat. Initially he felt very offended and reluctant to wear the hat. Everyone else thought that he was being uncooperative and self-centered. Later part the activity a small fight talk between the Indian and Singaporean student occurred and I was forced to calm down both of them. The class ended in a dispirited manner and everyone looked lost with the subject.

Lost in Translation – Fail to understand and accept Cultural context

Every culture has its own learned ways of set of beliefs, customs, values and norms and it affects communication rules[1]. While failing to apply to different sets of communication rules it can results to communication breakdown and interplay with Semantic and Psychological noise.

One good example to illustrate this point is during the activity of Edward de Bono’s six thinking hat. The Chinese student was unwilling to wear a green colour hat as later he explained during break that in China to wear a green colour hat is a symbol that his wife is having an affair –cuckold. On the other hand, the argument that broke between the Singaporean and Indian student were caused by the racists remarks and stereotyping on each other race and culture.

Stereotyping can create a Psychological and Sematic noise effect in communication. Stereotyping happens when you make an assumption based on basic and standard concepts. For example, the Indian students were mocking the Chinese student without understanding the real situation.

In order to avoid this, I realized I had to study the students profile before the class begins and altered the teaching materials accordingly. I have to be mindful and aware of differences and cultural awkwardness due to ignorant. In a classroom setting with different nationality, it is good to first explain that such situation might occur and we just have to take differences as something to learn. When such conflict occurred we have to invest some time to negotiate to the differences

Hell Classroom – Fail to observe Physical context

Physical context refers to the material objects surrounding the communication event and any other features of the natural world that influence communication. This can be in tangible and intangible form such as temperature, lighting noise, level and space. Teaching facilities such as projector, table and chair and speaker is also considered and Physical context. When these factors starts to distract the communication process it will then become a Physical Noise.

As a matter of fact, Physical context also operates interdependently with Psychological Context. For instance, the number of student influences the Psychological context as well as Physical context. In my situation I have to teach in a big classroom with only sixteen students. Everyone was sitting far from each other. It was hard to communicate with them and I had to raise my voice.

Seating arrangement can also make huge differences. A Classroom seating style is space effective and suitable for a traditional teaching style. The drawback is, it is difficult to have a personal contact and restricted view for the back seat. Moreover it Classroom seating style it implies more authority to the teacher. After less than twenty minutes I realized most of the students and were spending time on their mobile or computer.

Such situation is almost inevitable to some trainers. When we are faced with such situation we still have to remain positive. I should have introduced Kolb learning process – where learners are active in their learning. Instead of presenting a lecture, I should have changed the teaching style by conducting activity first followed by a short lecture. Changing the classroom setting to a Café style would also give a significant different meaning. The relationship between learners and teachers are closer. This way the class can be conducted with excitement, satisfaction and more attention

Mime’s poem – Fail to understand and read Non-verbal Communication.

Large percentage of our communication happen through non-verbal. A good analaogy is like a trying to understand to a mime reading a long poem. By using different types non-verbal communication such as Paralanguage, Haptics, Proxemics, Chronemics, Environment, Silence and Kinesics one would be able to understand what poem the mime is reading. Non-verbal communication is also inter-related with Cultural context as will be illustrated in the example below.

After the lecture on Edwards de Bono Six thinking hat, the Indian student looked very enthusiastic, the Korean student looked serious while the Chinese student kept on sighing and the rest of the student were just busy with either their mobile phone and computer. At that moment my confidence level was carried away not knowing whether they have understood the class and I decided to end the class.

In order to avoid this situation, I should have been more aware of non-verbal communication in classroom for three major reasons: an awareness of non verbal behaviour will allow me to become better receiver of students’ message. In this case, every culture and non-verbal communication has different meaning. Just like the Indian student even he showed a great enthusism he was in fact did not understand the lesson. It is his culture of showing respect to teacher, even if he did not agree or understand the teacher. Secondly, I will become a better sender of signals that reinforce learning. This can be done by constantly asking them whether they have understood every topic before moving on to the next topic. Lastly this mode of communication increases the degree of the perceived psychological closeness between teacher and student. My students would feel comfortable to ask even if it was a silly question.

Conclusion

A large part of teaching is about being able to communicate effectively to students. It is a crucial factor to the success of teaching delivery. Student’s satisfaction, participation and achievement can affect due to poor communication. In certain culture, teacher are percieved to have a more power than families, good examples to student. Therefore teacher have to be able to signal and read the right message.

Introduction

If all the trees were pens and all the oceans were ink, the knowledge that we can absorb would never end. For me as an educator, I can only show the door and it is up to the learner to choose which door to go and venture more from what’s inside the pandora’s box. This is the very fundamental of my teaching philosophy.

2nd chance

According to a survey in United States[1], 80% of Millionares are only a college graduates, 8% have Master degree and 6% have a PHD. I feel that in most of the education systems they focus too much on academic and designed for people to excel and success but neglect the importance on how to survive from failure. To some, we spend almost one third of our life in school. After which real life will welcome and have to struggle with the harsh reallity. And for most successful people today, they have survived not because what they have learnt in school. The system is designed to get you into the middle class, but to be on top, that’s entirely different thing.

I have learnt from experience that only when people gave me the 2nd chance and hope I still could survive and be back in the society again. Just like a rainbow that represents hope and beauty after the stormy rain. Sometimes one individual would never realized his or her own capability till someone or something triggers it.

In my class every students’ self esteem are equally important. They come from different countries and background. I could not agree more with Robert Sylwester[2] that with self-esteem it can help to improve performance. Just like in any NLP programme, it is designed boost your motivation and realized your potential. For me, education is about an inevitable procees of overcoming fear and failure – it may not necessary be an academic one.

It is no wonder that my Chinese students called me ‘father’: as the chinese saying: Once a teacher, always a father. Also not surprising that my TPI result is very high on “Nurture”.

Interpretive Process aimed at understanding reality.

Before this SDALT course I have never came across the term “learner centered”. I strongly agreed with the definition: “perspective that couples a focus on individual learners”[3]. I believe that everybody are unique and have their own individual strengths. Learning is an never ending process; which can be done in many ways at different pace. It is a painful process of finding out and accepting the truth and reality. As much as possible in my teaching delivery, if there are 20 students, it will be 20 different customised teaching delivery through a personal mentoring system.

I teach Graphic Design. In our education field, the end product is not the only main concern. We give much emphasize on student’s thinking process and different ways of looking at things. Design and taste had been a debatable subject, there is no absolute answer. The emphasize that I give in class is always on how they could justify and sell the ideas convicingly. I also emphasize on how student could go into “deep learning” mode to achieve the highest level of creativiy. It is very challenging to change the student mindset from “hard-ware” to “heart-ware”. They think that knowing to use software is as good as creating good design.

My motivation

As of today, I have been teaching for more than 4 years. Frankly speaking being a part-time Design lecturer is not so much of a financial rewarding “career” as compared to any full time job. Notice I used the word “career” and not “job”. It is an occupation that I do truly enjoy. The strong passion that I have, keeps me going till today. I have gained much self-satisfaction and personal rewards, especially when the profession goes in line with my belief: when a man dies, his acts come to an end, but; recurring charity or beneficial knowledge that has been passed on.

It is also with the much respect that I have on my wife and her family for being a ‘teacher’ family for many generations. My parents in law as a role model for being such a passionate teachers. As in traditional Chinese society rank, being a teacher is one of the most respected professions. Like they always say: “your job is to either groom or spoil the next generation”.

Conclusion

Interestingly my “Transmission” TPI result is one of the lowest. I challenged too much the school policy, relevancy of curriculum and effectiveness teaching materials. Ironically I termed the definition 3R: Respect school, Respect classmate and Respect yourself. Without respect the whole process of learning is deemed to fail. It is a reminder to myself that despite the differences the main objective of teaching have to be achieved. I have to admit that this is a also learning process for me to be a better educator.

Belonging to a Generation Y, the concept of 21st century learner all seems too familiar. I am already immune to sophisticated technology and exposure to diverse culture. Little did I realize that many of current believe and practice right now as a Graphic Design educator is already implant.

Teaching design has never been easy. Since the introduction of Internet the appreciation of design itself seems to change too fast. Either we get students who produce erratic work or all the obvious and blant “copy-paste” work. Digital age has also changed the value and ethics of design. Design becomes almost apparent, banal and sober. I find it disturbing when a student tells me that he knows how to operate a CAD program and claims that he has created a piece of masterpiece. Design in itself is organic and subjective. One might never agree to Plato, Hume or Kant when it comes to taste and aesthetics. I would urge my design students to collaborate within and outside their own community to create a new sub-culture interpretation. This would definitely develop the self-driven and initiative skills. On top of that, since the era of advertising, whatever is considered as underground culture, it will become the mainstream within a short period.

Justin Bieber a home made self-famous teenager, is earning more than a city’s population in Africa just by singing in Youtube. Similarly I realize that this also means that my students have the capacity to learn more things from the Internet at their own pace outside school time. I would consider letting my students to give a more flexibility and freedom of expression and choice. The use of web-based application such as blog as a design journal is a good idea to share students’ work and to let the world comment on their design process. Not only allowing students to interact and get new insights from the corner of the world but also to increase their ICT knowledge.

While it took several years for Nazi and the Japanese to control the world, it only took a few Gangnam style to conquer the world. Globalization has made our world smaller and we are no longer design for our own space. Just like the saying: Think Global Act Locally. I now realized that I always emphasize each time we create something we have to be aware and sensitive towards other culture and be a socially responsible designer. On the other hand as mobile technology becoming smaller and more advanced, I kept on reminding myself to be more tactful in class. The appropriate use of social media has been a concerned to many of us. I don’t want to be caught on mobile camera doing something silly in class and become virally famous on everybody’s Facebook wall.

My lecturer used to tell me that only 10% -30% of design graduates will end up working as designer. With the all-high ego which most of the early groom designers have, that ironic fact was seemed so hard to accept. It also made me realized that it is equally important not only to teach the subject but life and learning skills. Indeed I have realized that it is not so much what we learn but how we learn, how we solve a problem as a designer, how we are forced to always to think outside the box, how we convinced and communicated our ideas and how flexible and adaptable our design solutions can be.

I am constantly challenged to teach a subject that there is no one size fit all. It is easy to teach how to use software but for the 21st century context, I am confronted to relook at delivery method at a different angle. As much as possible I have to squeeze my students’ creative juice and ensure that they have applied critical thinking and reasoning. Rather than making students realize just the surface and how nice a design can be, the basic fundamentals and essence of design process, I believe, is much more important. Design thinking requires cross disciplinary and its method is applicable to all other fields. To me, design arguably itself a process of education. When we inform we educate, when we educate we learn even more. My role as a teacher is no longer about delivering the subject curriculum but will move towards mentoring, coaching and facilitating students towards a holistic approach. That’s the key to survive in the 21st century context.

It is one of the largest national economy in Southeast Asia. It has a market-based economy in which government plays a significant role owing more than 164 state owned-enterprises. The government administers prices on several basic goods, including fuel, rice, and electricity. That’s why this BBM issue will not go away that easily.

While foreign direct investors complain that Indonesia lacks the legal protections and infrastructure, last year itself the foreign direct investors grew 20% to a record of $20 billion. Garuda Indonesia re-brand itself and enjoying its steady growth. PT KAI (Kereta Api Indonesia) sent 82 people of its team to China studying how they operate the fast train and codes of working conducts. And the commission of DPR (government) staff is enjoying themselves in Germany using government’s money.

Indonesia will remain enjoying its sweet time despite the crisis in USA and Europe. Many of Indonesians who studied there, came back to Indonesia for good as it is easier to get job now. According to Mastercard, 57% of indonesian credit cards owner started their buying behavior by buying stuff online. The increase of online business has given birth to the new association AEI – Asosiasi E-Commerce Indonesia. Social media and Blackberry craze will still remain. Youtube actors and actress like ‘Riri Dumin’ and ‘Polisi Gorontalo’ are increasing.

Nevertheless the number of successful entrepreneur is relatively low: only 1.56% out of 240 million people. In ratio, it is only 1:83 as compared to Philippines 1:66. My point here is this is where ‘Designpreneurship’ and ‘Creative Economy’ will come into the pictures.

It is interesting to see people at poverty stage are forced to remain creative and innovative to survive with the never ending increase of oil and rice. Surprisingly these people who lives in the slum conditions invented many interesting applications out of their junkyard. One guy in Batam recycled used wood material and used it as an construction buiding materials. Another incident, there is a ‘self-studied’ drop out student that design solar panel for his small house and water powered genset system to supply the whole village electricity. Many similar stories are reported in the local TV channels which 40% of its content are only advertisement. The business in branding and ‘iklan’ (advertising) will never die. Everybody is going into multimedia and videography – and lately wedding photography.

And so most of school only offers Visual communication, Graphic Design and Motion Graphics. That’s where the money is. For those who joined product design, it is only their dream to work in IPTN – Industri Pesawat Terbang Nusantara (Domestic Aircraft Industry) only when Habibie decides to revive it. Or work at Honda designing the old same motorbike that ended up being used in the many recent gang fight. ITB and StisiTelkom does offer product design course. But most of the graduates ended up doing furniture design, handicraft and or some other traditional products.

There is a field of study that is part of Industrial design that is called Cognitive Study and Instructional System. This is where Indonesia currently needs the most. A factory in Cibaduyut, West Java hired children of 10 years and above to make shoes. The workflow design is so unproductive and can bring danger to these kids. If only it was done the other way, not only the kids can learn ‘skill’ but also bring ‘value’ to its society.

Recently there is an increase in motivational talk, that reminds everybody that it is okay to make mistake. The school system is designed with thick textbook and memorization – students are passive and just listen to teacher. Failure is not an option, teacher is always right and ended up they release this anger on the street whenever there is demo; with complimentary food and t–shirt.

Everybody has to fight themselves to fill their hungry stomach only with Indomie. Government support is not always an option. Unlike Thailand, the government has its own research centre for the public that offers trend prediction and ensure that the local products are sellable for International market. The lack of International resources, competition and foreign exposure just demotivate most of the local students. Although there are scholarship and help available but they are all scattered around. End up piracy and copying the overseas product is common. Design becomes banal and expected. Most of the time also, it is quite hard to go global.

Outside Jakarta, life is totally different. Culture shock almost everywhere. Although there is so much talent but it is a fact of life that a proper guidance with strong discipline and work etiquette is required. Most of them ended up hiring foreigners. There should be a system where ‘trainers’ get trains the ‘trainer’. This can be done in main city and passed down to smaller city. As such, over a period of long term social issues can be fixed. The person has to be taught with Adaptability, Consistency, Leadership, Respect and Trust. Just like SBY, he was based in USA and was able to passed down the knowledge to his country.

Product Design is more than entertainment. There is a lot of thoughts and psychological factors that needs to be considered. Donald Norman wrote a very good book on ‘Design of everyday things’ – from door hinge to car design. Design has to suit its context and solve its problem from beginning stage to after usage. Indonesia is not lacking in ‘hardware skill’ but more to ‘software’. A classic example would be biometric passport. The immigration department has imported that technology from overseas, but when they take the thumbprint, they do it anyhow and carelessly that one even cant even see the thumbprint itself, so whats the point? Another example, when you are entering a shopping center I Jakarta, why do you need 4 person standing at the gate picking up the ticket from the ticket machine?

Creative Economy does not have to be necessarily be global. It can just solve the local context and self-sustainable. From how can one design a safe LPG or circuit breaker to prevent fire. And how can one design a ‘unbreakable’ tsunami warning system. Garbage and mosquitos is like everybody’s good friend in Indonesia. How can through design thinking and sustainability this can be reduced?

Product design is not only making things nice. Many things have revolutionized human life such as car, camera, internet and robots. There is a great and deeper level of realization being taught in Product Design. If the above vision is achieved, I am sure that the mentioned knowledge and skill can transform Indonesia as a Developed country.

Mother’s Day is celebrated to honor every mother around the world. Without them we would be lonely and clueless in this World. While second Sunday in the month of May is celebrated as Mother’s day in most of the countries around the world, there are few countries that have varied Mother’s day date. For Russia, it is November 28 and for Norway it is February 13.

To some it is a practice to give presents to mother during this special day.It is the right time to show your greatest gratitude for her by presenting her a gift. You can find better choices of gifts at affordable prices at many online shops. Let’s discuss about some unique gifts ideas and consideration for your mother.

1. Surprise her

Be creative and let your imagination go wild. You don’t have to always give a tangible product, simple kisses and hugs sometimes can be very meaningful.

Surprise her by preparing her favorite breakfast, clean the kitchen or toilet for her, or even tidy up her favorite garden.

2. Be very personal

Home made unique gifts such as flower basket arrangement with a card quoted: ” I love you mom”.

Home made cupcake or some quilt

Create a poem, song just for her. Just like this guy singing Mother’s day song.

3. Be very special

Maybe your mom has been wanting to have a diamond ring/pendant that your dad refused to buy. Very more special than your dad, surprise her with the sparkling diamond and make her feel that she is the best person in your life.

Treat her some nice dinner and reminded her how grateful you are to have a mother like her.

4. Share gift or alone?

Do you have some budget to spend or sharing with your sibling? From there you will have a rough estimate of budget and can decide what items to buy.

5. Know what she likes

Know her favorite color, shapes, food, etc

Find out what she dislike from you and assured her that you will not do it again
